How do Orbital Gala Proceeds Benefit the Academy?

The Orbital Gala helps raise funds to support the Academy's educational, quality of care research and service programs. Here are just a few examples of how proceeds from last year's event were put to good use:

  • New educational resources were launched on the ONE Network as free member benefits, including:
    • Diagnose This – A new quick quiz is added each week. The survey feature allows ophthalmologists to view the recommended answer and see how their colleagues responded. To date, 50 Diagnose This quizzes have received more than 50,000 responses from around the world.
    • Video Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery – Twenty-five years of videos are currently being added to the Media Library. More than 80 videos have been posted, with many more to come.
    • Podcasts – Eight new podcasts have been added to the Media Library this year on topics from ethics to the aging population.
    • Courses – Two new courses on IOL power calculations have been recently added.
    • Academy Grand Rounds – Three new interactive cases submitted by members have been added this year.
  • Access to the ONE Network was provided to more than 19,000 ophthalmologists in 32 developing nations, regardless of the ability to pay.
  • The Academy supported Haiti relief efforts with the delivery of essential ophthalmic equipment and supplies. Ophthalmic education resources were also provided to our Haitian colleagues to help rebuild their clinics and practices. The in-kind donations were valued at more than a half-million dollars.
  • EyeCare America and its 7,000 volunteer U.S. ophthalmologists provided more than 200,000 people with free eye exams and eye health educational materials.
  • The Museum of Vision launched a free ophthalmic heritage website that will contain its entire 38,000-piece collection for use by members, medical historians and the public.
