The Foundation of the American Academy of Ophthalmology Advancing Education, Providing Better Care

Governance

The success of the Foundation is due largely to the contributions of time, expertise and financial support from members of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the public and ophthalmic industry.  More than 100 Academy members are involved in developing the Foundation’s activities, and over 7,500 more volunteer their time and expertise in their local communities through our public service programs.  Governance for this network of volunteers, donors and sponsors is provided by the following main bodies:

Board of Directors
The policy-making body of the Foundation. The charge of the Board of Directors is to manage and direct the business affairs of the Foundation in furtherance of its mission and strategic goals and allocates the resources necessary to accomplish those objectives.

Advisory Board
The Advisory Board is comprised of influential community and ophthalmic leaders who are committed to the Foundation’s mission.  Advisory Board members are directly involved in the development and management of program activities and fundraising.  This Advisory Board provides recommendations to the Board of Directors on the relative priority of major programs within the Foundation.

Committees
Under the direction of the Advisory Board, committees develop and implement specific programs that address the long-range objectives of the Foundation.

Corporate Advisory Council (CAC)
The Corporate Advisory Council was established to strengthen the relationship between industry and ophthalmology.  The CAC brings together leaders from the ophthalmic community to share mutual concerns, monitor trends and explore issues affecting eye care.
