ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AND PERSONAL IMPACT OF AMD Eye diseases causing severe vision loss have a huge personal impact on individuals and take an enormous social and economic toll on society. In 2003, the total direct and indirect estimated cost of all vision disorders in the United States reached more than $67 billion 41 – including $4 billion in costs to the U.S. government in terms of benefits and lost taxable income due from employment aged individuals with vision impairment and family members who serve as caregivers. 42 For many of us, these economic costs alone can be difficult to fathom. But for those who live with vision loss from AMD, the costs – both tangible an intangible – are all too real.
