Richard Liebreich (1830-1917)

Richard Liebreich was a preparator for Hermann von Helmholtz in 1850 when Helmholtz introduced the ophthalmoscope. Liebreich then went on to be an assistant to Albrecht von Graefe and during this period produced two versions of his own ophthalmoscope- one hand held and the other on a table stand.

In 1862 Liebreich moved to Paris where he taught at the University of Paris and wrote the first atlas of ophthalmoscopy.
